Workshops (you'll choose one in each of two sessions)

  1. COLLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE: "The Influence of Women on the Collective Intelligence of Human Groups", Dr. Chris Chabris PDF Slides
Come learn more about collective intelligence and groundbreaking findings from two recent studies on collective intelligence. These studies found that while collective intelligence was not associated with individual intelligence of group members, it was associated with three other factors: 1) the proportion of women in the group; 2) the distribution of turn-taking; and 3) the average social sensitivity of group members. We’ll discuss these findings and what they mean for your organization.
  2. INTERSECTIONALITY/DOUBLE MINORITY: "Difference Matters: Why Intersections of Identity Are Important for Technology and Technology Organizations", Dr. Brenda Allen PDF Slides
Most research in diversity and technology has focused on gender and race as relatively distinct categories of difference; but this approach has limitations that currently hamper change efforts. This workshop will consider the importance of moving beyond an “additive” approach toward difference, and an “intersectional” approach that takes into account important intersections among gender, race, class, and other categories of social identity. Learn how this view can help us reimagine our efforts to increase the participation of underrepresented groups in technology.
  3. UNINTENTIONAL BIASES: "Stereotype Threat: How It Affects Your Students and What You Can Do to Help", Dr. Joshua Aronson PDF Slides
The awareness of stereotypes about your group can suppress your intelligence, your motivation, your curiosity, and your ultimate achievement. This workshop will explain stereotype threat, the science behind it, and what you can do to combat it in yourself, your students, and your employees.
  4. HIGH SCHOOL COMPUTER SCIENCE EDUCATION, RECRUITMENT, AND RETENTION: "A High School Teacher's Perspective on Computer Science Recruitment and Retention", Seth Reichelson PDF Slides
Learn how active recruiting, retention, and word of mouth have been wildly successful at Lake Brantley High, a non-magnet school in Florida where enrollment for AP Computer Science in 2011-2012 was 65 girls and 79 boys (*45% female*.) This recruiting success is amplified with both mastery teaching and projects that engage diverse students, practices that can be widely adopted for bringing more and diverse students into computing.
  5. NCWIT2GO: "Where Could You Take NCWIT, and Where Can We Take You?"
Jenny Slade, Dr. Wendy DuBow, Jennifer Jirous, and Dr. Charlie McDowell PDF Slides
Have you gone to a conference and thought to yourself, “NCWIT should be here”? Have you ever wanted to attend a computing-related event where NCWIT had a presence, but you didn’t have the budget to swing it? NCWIT2GO is a pilot project intended to broaden the reach of NCWIT’s message and resources by supporting NCWIT members to take our message “to-go,” as you attend various computing conferences and outreach events. Come hear more about the project, give us your feedback, and tell us where we can take you.
  6. IMPLICIT STEREOTYPES AND IMPACT ON MINORITY SELF-CONCEPTIONS: "Female Experts and Peers Are 'Social Vaccines' That Strengthen Women's Decisions to Pursue STEM", Dr. Nilanjana Dasgupta PDF Article
This workshop will discuss research identifying protective factors in learning environments that increase girls and women's interest and participation in STEM versus other factors that decrease their interest and participation. Protective factors often involve interactions with same-sex experts and peers in STEM who enhance girls’ and women's self-concept implicitly and unconsciously. We will look at some concrete interventions emerging from our research data that can be and implemented in the classroom to increase girls’ and women’s engagement in STEM.
  7. THE EVALUATION NUDGE:"An Intervention to Overcome Gender Biases in Hiring, Promotion, and Job Assignments", Theresa Lund
This workshop explores how the behavioral economics concept of a “nudge” can be applied to questions of gender equality and diversity. It will examine how hiring processes can be changed to increase diversity and how gender diversity in groups affects performance. Specifically, using laboratory experiments, this work analyzes how hiring in bundles as compared to hiring one at a time affects the choices people make and how comparison information focuses people’s attention on more objective criteria such as past performance as compared to stereotypical judgments.
  8. JOB ADVERTISEMENTS: "How Job Ads Can Reinforce or Undermine the Status Quo", Dr. Aaron Kay PDF Slides
People are powerfully, and usually unconsciously, motivated to view the status quo as the way things should be. Recognizing this fact can help us avoid recreating the gender imbalance in computing. One example of a process that very likely contributes to gender imbalance comes from research on want ads. In this workshop, you will learn about how the wording of these ads subtly communicates the assumption that men are appropriate candidates.
  9. REVERSE MENTORING PROGRAMS: "Reverse Mentoring: What is it, and How Might it Improve Diversity and Inclusion in Your Organization?", Rosie Cofre, Randall Lane, Tina Wing, and Angela Archon PDF Slides
Come hear about two companies’ experiences with "reverse mentoring," an innovative mentoring approach where junior employees or employees from underrepresented groups mentor senior employees or employees from majority groups. Panelists will discuss their experiences with the program, challenges, and how they have benefited from it.  This will be an informal session, encouraging interactive dialogue with the audience.
